When the Club was formed in 1978 the only organised power dinghy races were the Avon Descent and the Blackwood Classic 250. The Power Dinghy Racing Club now organises a full year round racing calendar, and events are conducted at locations around Western Australia, including Boyup Brook, Northam, Mandurah, Nannup, Bridgetown and local events in the Perth Region. Although a highly competitive sport, the Club is very much family oriented and there are several husbands and wives, fathers and sons/daughters and brothers/sisters competing in all events including our premier event, the Avon Descent. Junior dinghy racing Members, as young as 14 years, may compete in Club events enabling them to gain several years experience before tackling the more arduous river races, which have a minimum age of 17 years. Power Dinghy Racing Club events are run under strict racing rules with a strong emphasis on safety. All competitors must undergo a written licence examination (open book) and a swim test prior to racing in any event. All craft undergo scrutineering before entering the water to ensure that they meet the strict safety requirements and racing specifications. There are four classes of competition, the 10hp Sports, 8hp Sports and 8hp Standard, and the new Solo Class. Members can also race in the Formula 8 or Formula 10 Classes. These single seat racers are fast and exciting to drive and watch. Formula 8s/Formula 10 were designed by Club Members and are built to a strict formula to ensure uniformity of performance and thus encourage driver skill. With their sleek lines and phenomenal cornering capabilities they make for superb racing entertainment. Formula 8 racing started in 1986 and we now have events for Ladies, Mens and Rookies (10-14 years), which has resulted in numerous families sharing the same craft allowing each family member to race in their own Class. Social events are conducted by the Power Dinghy Racing Club throughout the year encouraging members , support crews and families to get together, foster the sport and introduce new Members. The Club always welcomes new members, so why not find out how to become involved? |
